Their riches, too great to be counted, flowed without end like a river into the ocean. Their authority and imperial power stretched, without impediment, from the sunrise to sunset.

Whose wealth, you ask, and whose power? The maharajas–the forgotten kings who sat atop India’s royal pantheon in a bygone age. Today, while the maharajas’ reign has long since drawn to a close, vestiges of them remain alive: Their palaces and temples still stand, their name still commands respect and awe.

And now, like their legacies, the lifestyle of the maharajas has returned as well, thanks to the spectacular Maharajas’ Express of India. On board this train, it is as if the palaces of those illustrious rulers had become uprooted from their foundations and now sailed across India as railway carriages.

Unlike virtually all other luxury trains in the world, the Maharajas’ Express offers its passengers four cabin options–deluxe, junior suite, express suite, and Presidential–allowing you to decide how you want to experience the opulence of a monarch’s journey across India.

All cabins come standard with live television, a DVD player, high-speed wi-fi, a direct dial international telephone facility, an electronic safe, a wardrobe, a private bathroom, and individual temperature control units, the latter of which is a feature not seen on any other luxury train in India. While these basic amenities are a great way to begin your luxury journey, the various cabin options only bring you closer to the lifestyle of a maharaja.

The deluxe cabin, 112 square feet in size, comes with all of the above features as well as a folding writing table. With 20 deluxe cabins on board, you have your choice of a double-bedded or twin-bedded cabin. Or, you could simply upgrade to a 150 square foot junior suite, which includes a the bonuses of a writing table, two chairs, and another special feature that sets the Maharajas’ Express apart from the competition: Panoramic windows, so that you can enjoy all of the magnificent views as you ride the rails across India. There are 18 junior suites on board.

The next size up, the express suite, jumps to 220 square feet. To give you the real royal treatment, all express suites–18 in total–feature a complimentary mini bar, a living room with a sofa, a table, upholstered arm chairs, and a side table in addition to the perks of the previous cabin sizes. As an added bonus, your express suite also entitles you to a luxury car for any of the magnificent off-board excursions.

But to travel as only a true maharaja would, the only option is the Presidential Suite.

At a stunning 448 square feet, the Presidential Suite provides you with two bedrooms and a separate living room with a sofa, table, and mini bar. And since royalty requires personalized service and attention, a stay in the Presidential Suite includes a 24-hour private valet to attend to all your needs.

The attentive staff on board the Maharajas' Express are happy to serve you world-class cocktails, such as in the stately Rajah Club.

Of course, guests staying in any cabin size have access to the Mayur Mahal and Rang Mahal–the two luxury restaurants on board serving delicious cuisine–and can enjoy socializing with their fellow travelers in either the regal Rajah Club or the elegant Safari club lounge cars.

So for your next exotic getaway, don’t bother staying somewhere that will treat you like a king; stay at the only place in the world that will treat you like a maharaja.
